Analysis of the Medical Device Industry in Thailand (Executive Summary)
Thailand’s medical device industry continues to advance, driven by structural support. Key drivers include the full transition into an aged society, the rise of chronic diseases, a recovering medical tourism sector, investments by private hospitals, and momentum from government policies (BOI, EEC/EECmd). For 2026–2027, the domestic market is expected to grow by an average of about 4% per year, fueled by increasing domestic demand and public-private investment. At the same time, the industry faces risks from global trade uncertainties, the volatility of the Thai baht, and intense price competition within the government procurement system.
In terms of market structure, high-tech medical device groups (such as imaging, advanced electromedical, and IVD devices) remain primarily reliant on imports. Conversely, the medical consumables segment, where most Thai operators are SMEs, has competitive potential that can be expanded for export. Key strategies include shifting towards mid-tech products while simultaneously upgrading quality systems (ISO 13485/14971), designing production to comply with export standards, enhancing after-sales service, and offering flexible financial plans to reduce buyers' Capital Expenditure. Using regulatory sandboxes and public hospitals to accelerate product acceptance, and diversifying export markets while managing exchange rate and supply chain risks are crucial for sustainable growth.
