Regenerative medicine is a form of treatment where biological mechanisms play a role in repairing, replacing, and regenerating tissues and organs affected by injury, disease, or natural aging process. It is considered as a new form of treatment in the biomedical industry.
Based on the technologies used in the treatments, there are three types of regenerative medicines, as follows:
Restoring degeneration is expected to extend lifespans and improve the quality of life. The present treatment knowledge and technologies have been developing rapidly. As a result, there are expectations that chronic or incurable diseases will now be cured.

Global Regenerative Medicines Statistics
Kelly Scientific, a consulting firm, indicated that the current regenerative medicine market is worth $18.9 billion as of 2016, and will reach $53 billion by 2021 or the compound annual growth rate of 23.3% (2017-2022). Factors contributing to the rapid growth are decreasing fertility rates, longer lifespans, increasing prevalence of diseases such as diabetes, osteoarthritis, heart and vascular diseases, Alzheimer’s disease and other diseases among the elderly. The prevalence of chronic diseases also contributes to the growth of this industry.
Global Regenerative Medicine Market Share
The global regenerative medicine market share is segmented into four groups - namely small molecules and biologics, cell therapy, gene therapy, and tissue engineering. Cell therapy accounts for 60% of the market share, followed by tissue engineering with 27%, gene therapy with 8%, small molecules and biologics with 5%.
Cell therapy is the largest segment and the highest revenue generator, with over 50 cell therapy-based regenerative products approved and marketed. For example, chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells, engineered receptors that are grafted on to the T cell (a type of white blood cell), are increasingly being used to treat a host of diseases, including cancer.
Factors responsible for the growth of this market also include the emergence of stem cell technology, advancements in monitoring devices and surgery technologies, and a shortage of organs for transplantation. A increase in focus on stem cells and growth in R&D activities are expected to supplement the market growth.
Though the cell therapy segment has the most promising future and holds the largest market, the small molecules & biologics segment is expected to grow at the highest CAGR of 33.3% (from 2017 to 2023), due to its potential to stimulate dormant or endogenous cells to regain their regenerative properties.

North America has the largest regenerative medicine market, as there are a number of existing biopharmaceutical operators and an increase in research and development where there is a need to create innovations and release new products to the market continuously. It is followed by Europe, and Asia-Pacific which has the compound annual growth rate of 38.6 % per year (2017-2023), thanks to the governmental support and rules on use of restorative medicine, namely in Japan.
